| 13612 | Registry was informed of his death by son Eduard. See Eduard's death certificate for more information. He didn't die at home. He was on Gramattenbrücker Feldmark in the forest when he died. A terrible family tragedy. Large German daily newspapers reported on it. The old Eduard Rosentreter was known as an easily excitable, domineering and irascible man. On January 18, 1900, he and his sons Eduard (27 years old) and Ernst (23 years old) fell trees in the forest. His son Eduard was stubborn and did not obey his father's orders. The father got angry. He had a measuring rod in his hand and hit the son on the head with it. The son got angry too. He took a piece of wood and hit his father on the head. He performed the blow with his left arm, as the right arm was injured. The father suffered a serious head injury and died. Nevertheless, both sons continued to beat him. Eduard junior reported the death to the authorities and said the father had been killed by a tree. The next day they made a comprehensive confession to the head of the office of Kramske (now Krępsko). Both young men were arrested and taken to the judicial prison in Schneidemühl (now Piła) as detainees. On April 4, 1900, the trial took place before the jury in Schneidemühl (now Piła). They were granted extenuating circumstances. Eduard received 1 year and 6 months in prison. Ernst received nine months in prison. Pretrial detention was credited to both of them. You can read about this in the following issues of the newspaper "Posener Tageblatt“: 1. First supplement to the morning edition of the Posener Tageblatt (39th year, No. 38) from January 24, 1900. 2. Noon edition of the Posener Tageblatt (39th year, No. 51) from January 31, 1900. 3. Morning edition of the Posener Tageblatt (39th year, No. 162) from April 6, 1900. | Rosentreter, Eduard (I6543)

| 13737 | Research provided by Daniel Rosentreter (Grandson) I10410 Nikolai’s life was significantly affected by the major events of 20th century European history. He was born in Moscow into a wealthy family, his father (Otto Fedorovich Rosentreter?) had a transportation business and dealt in German medicines and German toys. Originally this part of the German speaking family originated from Goldingen, Kurland (now Kuldiga, Latvia) where they (after family lore) settled after leaving Germany many centuries ago. Nikolai was incredibly proficient in languages. At his home in Moscow, they spoke French and he had a private teacher for English. He was educated at the institute of Oriental Studies (where he learned Arabic ) and worked as a translator in Moscow for the Tzar’s government. He was also a cadet at Aleksandrov military school. Initially in the first days of the October revolution in 1917, the cadets and officers of the Aleksandrov school drove the insurgent Bolsheviks militia out of the Kremlin that they had occupied. This was called the White Guard – the first time this term was used. After some fierce battles the Red Army/ Bolshevik revolutionaries recaptured the Kremlin. They tore away the shoulder straps from the cadets, took away their weapons and let Nikolai and the others go home. https://www.rbth.com/history/326473-under-fire-moscows-kremlin-1917 In the meantime, his brother, Boris fought in the Russian Civil War in the White Army under General Wrangel. He managed to return to Moscow in 1920 for his little brother (Nikolai) and they left for the Crimea peninsular. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyotr_Wrangel From the Crimea peninsular Nikolai and his brother Boris were evacuated on ships with the remainders of the White Army and other civilians to Constantinople (now Istanbul, Turkey). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evacuation_of_the_Crimea Arriving in Constantinople in 1920, Nikolai and Boris had very little means to make a living. Nikolai found a job and worked as a truck driver on the border to Persia and later as a chauffeur for the German embassy. He and in his brother lived together under very poor circumstances in an empty garage for a while where they also repaired transistor radios to make a living. Eventually the stateless two received a grant from the Swedish government for 10 US dollars (a fortune in those days) which allowed Nikolai and Boris to continue onwards to new destinations - Boris and his family left to Orthodox Athens, and Nikolai left to Germany, from where this part of the Rosentreter family left centuries ago for Goldingen, Kurland and then Moscow. https://www.dailysabah.com/feature/2017/07/07/tsarist-russians-in-istanbul He moved to Berlin where he married Irmengard Reul, the daughter of a pharmacist. He studied and became a professional translator (Diplom Dolmetscher) and lived at Markgraf Albrecht Strasse 13 until the final years of WW2. Nikolai found work as a translator for the German foreign service (Auswärtiges Amt) and his two sons Konstantin and Frank were born in 1931 and 1939. He joined the NSDAP and during the final years of the war, was sent to Fürth in Bavaria to serve as a translator to the Russian forced laborers in the Nobel Dynamit weapons factory. His wife Irmengard and the two children Konstantin and Frank were evacuated from Berlin in 1942/43 to a friend with a rural estate in Posen, Warthegau, Prussia (now Poland) to escape the immanent bombing of the city of Berlin. The family visited their father in Fürth for Christmas 1944. During that visit, the family witnessed the fire-bombing and totally destruction of the nearby town of Nürnberg on January 2, 1945. The destruction of the railway and train station made a return to Posen for the family impossible, so they stayed in Fürth. http://www.revisionist.net/nuremberg-bombing.html At the end of the war, Irgmengard had to evacuate again to a small town Dörfles in the Fränkischen Schweiz, Bavaria where she and her two sons lived in a single room at a poor farmers house who provided for them. At the same time, Nikolai was arrested by the Allied forces and then locked-up in a camp for denazification for about 21 months (Entnazifizierung). He joined his family in the single room in Dörfles where Frank attend school in the nearby town and helped the farmer on the fields while Konstantin managed to work for the American allied forces as a translator to also provide food and substinance for his family. After a hard time in Dörfles, they moved to Puschendorf, where Nikolai had a friend that he met during his time at the denazification internment camp. The friend in Puschendorf was a wealthy farmer and renovated the former chicken house for the family to live in. In Puschendorf, Nikolai initially found some work as a translator for a business with connections to the Middle East. During retirement he continued to teach Arabic and Russian in Fürth at the Volkshochschule (adult education school) well into his 80s. He could speak seven languages fluently including German, Russian, Arabic, Persian, French, Turkish and English. He died in a house fire, 7. October 1980 in Puschendorf, Bavaria. | Rosentreter, Nikolai Ottovich (I2875)

| 13769 | Samuel Rosentreter was born on 4 June 1892 in Gollantsch near Bromberg (today Golancz in Poland) as the son of the Jewish livestock dealer Isidor Rosentreter and his wife Sara, née Marcus. Until age 14, he attended the eight-grade elementary school (Volksschule) in Gollantsch, subsequently completing a tailor’s apprenticeship, and working as a journeyman tailor after passing his journeyman’s examination. In 1912, he was drafted into the military and in the First World War he served with a battalion in Posen (today Poznan in Poland) and with an ammunition train of the artillery in France, before being transferred to the Russian front in 1915. Decorated with the Iron Cross Second Class and the Honor Cross for Front-Line Veterans, he returned from the war and worked as a tailor again. On 26 May 1921, he married Fanny Weinberger (born on 4 April 1898 in the Bavarian city of Passau), whose father had established himself as a textiles tradesman in Altona. The Rosentreter couple too lived in Altona’s old town center at Bäckerstrasse 22 (today Hoheschulstrasse) on the second floor. Samuel Rosentreter became a partner in the men’s wear store of his father-in-law, Alfred Weinberger, at Grosse Bergstrasse 128. In 1927, the properties at Grosse Bergstrasse 99/101 and Unzerstrasse 4 passed into Rosentreter’s hands; on the ground floor of the building at Grosse Bergstrasse 99/101, he had already been running his own men’s wear store for two years. The Rosentreter couple had four children. The oldest son, Siegfried Josef, was born on 9 Feb. 1923, followed by Ingbert on 15 Mar. 1924, Betti on 16 Jan. 1926, and Alfred on 4 June 1934. In 1927, the family lived at Grosse Bergstrasse 170 at times and in 1931, even before the birth of the youngest son, Alfred, the family moved into a house of their own at Behnstrasse 37 in Altona. In Feb. 1935, Samuel Rosentreter’s mother passed away; his father had died already. The Nazi terror against the Jewish population escalated. During the November Pogrom of 1938 on 9/10 Nov., "Kristallnacht,” the Altona Synagogue was devastated, Jewish businesses plundered, families terrorized, and Jewish men arrested. Samuel Rosentreter, too, was taken into "protective custody” ("Schutzhaft”). Together with nearly 900 Hamburg Jews, he was held in the Fuhlsbüttel concentration camp during the night of 10 to 11 November and then transferred from there to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Not until 14 December was he released. By this time, the family had attracted the attention of the office of the Chief Finance Administrator (Oberfinanzpräsident), which blocked Samuel Rosentreter’s accounts and life insurance policies by means of a "security order” ("Sicherungsanordnung”). Standardized lines served as a pretext for this measure: "The Samuel Rosentreter couple is Jewish. One may assume that they will emigrate in the near future.” Possibly, the family did indeed contemplate plans to emigrate. In Jan. 1939, Samuel Rosentreter sold the property at Behnstrasse 37. On 24 Jan., the foreign currency office noted, "The Rosentreter couple have assets: property at Behnstrasse, sold, property at Grosse Bergstrasse 99/101 and Unzerstrasse 4, not yet sold, men’s wear store at Gr.[osse] Bergstrasse 99 to be liquidated.” However, the properties were encumbered with mortgages and the couple had debts. At this point, Samuel Rosentreter was allowed to dispose of the properties and, respectively, of outstanding money from their sale only with permission by the foreign currency office. The textiles store of the Weinberger family at Grosse Bergstrasse 128, whose partner he still was, was "Aryanized,” i.e., expropriated and transferred into non-Jewish ownership. On 9 Feb. 1939, Samuel Rosentreter was once again arrested and held in pretrial detention at the Fuhlsbüttel prison. As a Jew, he had been reported to police for "racial defilement” ("Rassenschande”). After the Nuremberg Laws [on race] had made sexual relationships between Jewish and non-Jewish persons punishable with a prison term, the denunciations became more frequent. Jewish men convicted were usually committed to concentration camps or (later) deported after serving their sentence. On 24 February, the court cashier’s office confiscated Samuel Rosentreter’s assets toward securing the accruing court fees and costs for execution of sentence. The properties were encumbered with a cautionary mortgage. By mid-March, his textiles business was liquidated, with the Hamburg court cashier’s office seizing the business revenues and credit balances. In vain, Fanny Rosentreter tried to recover part of the confiscated assets; she indicated not having any funds to cover her own livelihood and that of her four children. She learned that her husband had a daughter from an extramarital relationship. He had impregnated a 15-year-old girl who was completing an apprenticeship in his store since 1927; on 13 Jan. 1929, daughter Else Broecker had been born. With permission from the Chief Finance Administrator, the monthly alimony payments to which Samuel Rosentreter was obliged by the Hamburg youth welfare office were now to be withdrawn from the otherwise blocked account with the "Altonaer Sparcasse von 1799” for the next five months. On 17 June 1939, Fanny Rosentreter applied to the foreign currency office for 1,000 RM (reichsmark) for her and the four children. "Due to the detention of my husband since February, I have become ill and I am forced to spend a lot of money on tonics. My second son is scheduled to go to Berlin (Pankow) for his apprenticeship this Tuesday. I am to cover the costs of his equipment […] and any possible sickness. In addition, my husband has an illegitimate child for whose maintenance I am to cover retroactively. I hold no proof of this in my hands. However, my husband told me in the presence of a police officer during my last visit. He was served an order to pay the maintenance costs by the court bailiff.” A one-time sum of 1,000 RM was granted and the monthly allowance for the family was raised from 350 to 500 RM. On 1 Aug. 1939, Fanny Rosentreter applied to the foreign currency office, requesting that revenues generated by the properties at Grosse Bergstrasse 99 and Unzerstrasse 4 be deposited to her account rather than the blocked account of her imprisoned husband, "in order that I and my four underage children might be saved from destitution at least for the next little while, since the breadwinner is missing and we do not have any means to earn an income after all.” Due to her husband’s arrest, she had got into a psychological crisis. "Because of the upsets, I am not able to keep on my feet. None of the tonics and medications I needed has yielded any success.” However, the authority reduced the monthly allowance to 450 RM. A plea for clemency by Fanny Rosentreter on behalf of her husband was rejected by the Senior Public Prosecutor’s Office with the Hamburg Regional Court (Oberstaatsanwaltschaft beim Landgericht Hamburg) in Aug. 1939; Samuel Rosentreter had to remain in pretrial detention. On 30 Oct., Fanny Rosenberger informed the finance administration that she urgently needed the sum in her account "for the purpose of subsistence and, if possible, toward emigration or ship’s passages. […] My strength is spent due to all of the upsets. […] I would like to try to emigrate with my children and later with my husband and I dare hope that you will help me. I would like to note that I am Jewish, identification card no.: A 00 608.” However, after the start of the Second World War in September of that year, legal departure was possible only to Latin America or Shanghai at the most. The fall of 1939 saw criminal proceedings against Samuel Rosentreter before the Hamburg Regional Court. He admitted having had sexual intercourse with underage non-Jewish female trainees at his textiles store in the 1920s – some of these offenses were deemed past the statute of limitations before court. But Samuel Rosentreter denied the instances of sexual harassment of which female witnesses of the prosecution accused him in the period after passage of the Nuremberg Laws. However, the court came to the decision that in 1938 and 1939, he was guilty "of attempted racial defilement [Rassenschande] in accordance with Sec. 2.5 Par. 2 of the Law for the Protection of German Blood and German Honor [Gesetz zum Schutz des deutschen Blutes und der deutschen Ehre] dated 15 Sept. 1935, Sec. 43 of the Reich Criminal Code [Reichsstrafgesetzbuch – RStGB].” During the trial on 29 Nov. 1939, the Hamburg Regional Court sentenced the accused to six years in prison overall on charges of "attempted racial defilement in two instances” and "sexual relationships with two minors in two instances.” The period of pretrial detention was calculated against his prison term. He was deprived of his civil rights for the duration of six years. On 19 Jan. 1940, Samuel Rosentreter was transferred from the Fuhlsbüttel concentration camp to the Bremen-Oslebshausen penitentiary. In the meantime, Fanny Rosentreter along with sons Siegfried, Ingbert, five-year-old Alfred, and daughter Betti were quartered in the "Jews’ house” ("Judenhaus”) at Sonninstrasse 14 (today Biernatzkistrasse), the former residential home of the Salomon Joseph und Marianne Hertz Stiftung. From there, the family was deported to the Lodz Ghetto in German-occupied Poland on 25 Oct. 1941. Siegfried Rosentreter was deregistered from the ghetto on 17 Nov. 1941 at the age of 18 and allegedly taken to perform labor duty. He perished. Fanny, Ingbert, Alfred, and Betti Rosentreter were transported to the nearby Chelmno extermination camp on 10 May 1942 and murdered. Samuel Rosentreter was committed from the Bremen-Oslebshausen penitentiary to the Auschwitz extermination camp on 14 Jan. 1943, where he was murdered on 15 Feb. 1943. | 13784 | Sergey Antonovich, born in 1888, was born and lived in Moscow. He was a historian by profession and taught at the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute named after Bubnov. In the early thirties, Sergei Antonovich was sent to the number of “red professors” in Novosibirsk to create a scientific center. Sergei Antonovich suffered from a serious disease, as they said then, malignant anemia. In this regard, he returned to Moscow, where he continued his teaching activities at the Department of New History of the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute named after Bubnov as an assistant professor of the department. In 1936, arrests of department employees began and almost all employees were arrested, and even their wives. Sergei Antonovich, after his arrest, very soon died in prison from his main illness. | Rosentreter, Sergey Ottovich (I2827)

| 13803 | Snip is from FHL Microfilm 752864 for the Evangelical (Lutheran) church at Schokken, which after 1815 was organized in Kreis (County) Wongrowitz, Grand Duchy of Posen, Prussia. This marriage is from 28 Oct 1781. At that time, Schokken was still under the Polish kingdom and was not part of the First Partition of Poland, which gave West Prussia and the Netze (River) District to Prussia. For this area, it is important to understand events in the context of when they occurred. The record states that on the 28 Oct 1781 married Peter Rosentreter, bachelor and second son of the "Wirth" [landlord, farmer] Friedrich Rosentreter in Gramsdorf, with the maiden Susanna Stewenau, middle daughter of the "Wirth" Michael Stewenau at Bärenbusch. This couple, Peter and Susanna (Stewenau) Rosentreter, would have been one couple of my paternal side 4th-great-grandparents. Courtesy Brian Podoll | Family (F1999)

| 13804 | Some confusion in this record. Birth record states mother as Anna Sophie Bonatz but Martin was at that time married and having children with Gottliebe. Martin married Anna Sophie after the death of Gottliebe. As Johann and Gottliebe had a daughter Anna Louise at around the same time in 1802, one can only assume he was sleeping with both of the sisters!!! Maybe they were twins and one night he confused them :) | Rosentreter, Regina Dorothea (I2100)

| 13890 | Suzanne Schwab Hill (Great Grandaughter) ESCAPE FROM CARLINVILLE, ILLINOIS Some of what appears below I learned through my uncle, Wilbert Schwab. He likely heard some of this story from his grandmother, Mary Schwab, born Anna Maria Rosentreter. She was the oldest child of Andrew and Rosa Rosentreter. I have found several sources that lend credence to what my uncle told me. Andreas (Andrew) Rosentreter was born January 19, 1845, in Abrau, West Prussia, now Poland. His parents were Joseph Mathias Rosentreter and Anna Katarzyna Musolf, part of the Koschneiderei, an area settled by Germans in the 14th century. They maintained their Germanic culture and their Catholic faith. According to Joseph Rink’s “Koschneidereisohne,” (Sons of the Koschneiderei) written in 1924, Josef was a prosperous farmer, and sent most of his children to the gymnasium (high school) in Konitz. At some point, Andrew served in the Army, returning an alcoholic. He married Rosa Schultz in 1875. His brother was Augustus Rosentreter, the last German bishop of Kulm, West Prussia. Augustus met Francis Ostrop while in the seminary. Father Ostrop immigrated to America and became the pastor of St. Joseph Church in Carlinville, Ill., in 1877. Augustus may have thought that if Andrew was to get away from his friends In Abrau, he wouldn’t drink, so Augustus arranged for Andrew and Rosa to immigrate to Carlinville, Ill., with three of their children in 1880. A son named Andrew died on the trip and was buried at sea. Andrew was a tenant farmer in rural Carlinville, becoming a citizen in 1888. In late January 1898, he sold some hogs and disappeared. The family learned that he had returned to Abrau and his family of origin. His return was documented in “Koschneidereisohne.” Translated here is the commentary: “The second eldest son, named Andreas, his destiny driven to America, where he bought rural property. One day homesickness, the yearning for his parental house, for his native country and his brothers and sisters gripped him. Without giving a message to his family before, he rushed a ship, wearing his overalls and came back suddenly and unexpected to his native place to visit his folks.” Family lore had it that he wrote a letter home asking his wife and children to return and join him. His wife replied that they were established in America and weren’t returning. The Carlinville Democrat had this article in the February 3, 1898, edition: “Andrew Rosentreter, who lived on the Steidley farm, west of town, has been missing since last Thursday. That day he sold 40 hogs, receiving about $300 in cash, and since then nothing has been seen or heard of him. He was financially involved, and some of his friends think he has taken up his abode elsewhere. He leaves a wife and seven children. He is a German about (actually 53) 60 years of age, short and heavy build. His friends and relatives are making efforts to locate him or learn whether he has been foully dealt with for the money he had on his person.” The Macoupin County Enquirer had this in its February 9, 1898, edition under the headline, “He’ll Never Come Back”: “Andrew Rosentreter has been heard from. He is the middle aged farmer, with family, who leased the Steidley farm west of town. January 27 Rosentreter sold his hogs for $275 and suddenly disappeared. The agent at the C&A (railroad) said a man answering to his description purchased a ticket for Chicago. This is now authenticated by a letter dated Chicago from Rosentreter himself to Franz Schultz who resides on the Frickie farm east of Carlinville. He said his intention is to go back to his old home in Germany and whatever happens he will never return to Carlinville. Rosentreter was financially embarrassed and this appears to be his method of getting rid of his troubles. In the meanwhile his family will have to do the best they can.” A similar article appeared in the Carlinville Democrat on February 10, 1898, with an additional sentence, “He is running away from his debts as well as his family, as he was deeply involved.” His German family must have convinced him to return to Carlinville because he boarded a ship in Hamburg on April 14, 1898. He traveled via the Furst Bismarck to Ellis Island and arrived on April 23, 1898. My uncle told me that his wife Rosa refused to allow him to return to the family home. He went to live with daughter Mary and husband Frank. She was due to have a child in May 1898, my grandfather, Edward. By the 1900 census he was living with Rosa and the family apparently on a farm, because his occupation was that of farmer in Carlinville Township. Andrew died July 20, 1927, and is buried in Old Calvary Cemetery. | Rosentreter, Andreas Joseph (Andrew) (I0390)
