The family lived in Altoona, Washington, where Rudy worked as a fisherman. However, Rudy died before Robert turned four, and Della could not support her two sons on her own. Robert stayed with his mother, who moved to Washougal, and Fred was sent to stay with his grandfather, Albert Kemp, and his second wife, Edith. Because of the lack of funds, Robert worked odd jobs from the time he was young. He was held back one year in school and graduated from Washougal High School in 1937. In 1940, he married Sarah Roley, and they had 6 children. Robert also had 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. In 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the U.S.S. Laws, a destroyer.
